BILTMORE VILLAGE
There is so much to do in Asheville that visitors can never see or do it all, certainly not in one trip. So, you might as well book the dates for your return visit to Applewood Manor. Because when you head home, you will be talking about all the things you wanted to do and just did not have time for!
We know that most first time visitors have the Biltmore Estate at the top of their to do list. But do not overlook the Biltmore Village, located across from the entrance to the Estate. The Village is very convenient from Applewood Manor, only 3.5 miles or about 15 minutes by car.
The Village was originally a planned community for estate workers and was designed by world-renowned architects as a picturesque residential community with the quaint atmosphere of an English community. The homes and buildings were built by the same talented artisans that built the Estate. The buildings are historic—constructed in the late 1890s. Today, it is a bustling shopping destination and home to some of Asheville’s favorite restaurants. You will find one-of-a-kind shops as well as familiar national chains. Most of the businesses are in original cottages and buildings. The Village was declared a National Historic Area in 1989. The tree-lined brick walkways and period architecture make for a delightful experience. There are more than forty shops and ten cafes and restaurants.
Don’t overlook the side streets, like London Road and Reed Street, where you will discover remarkable finds including London District Studios in the emerging London Entertainment District, providing live music and several breweries.
Of course, shopping around Christmas time is a special delight as you probably figured it would be. On the first weekend in December, the community transforms itself into a Victorian-age village with concerts, refreshments, and strolling vocalists in period costumes. But you are likely to find things happening throughout the year. For example, in August it hosts its major outdoor arts and craft fair drawing thousands to the tree-covered grounds of the Cathedral of All Souls in the Biltmore Village.
Most shops are open Monday through Saturday from 10 AM to 5:30 PM and Sunday from 1 to 5 PM. However, hours are usually extended for the holidays. But the restaurants are open for dinner—including Ruth's Chris Steak House, Village Wayside Bar & Grille, Fig, The Cantina, Red Stag Grill, and the Corner Kitchen. So, you can enjoy the wonder and ambiance of this transplanted Victorian English Village at night.
